2026 marked the dawn of Ethernet’s next era, one shaped by the scale and demands of AI. The Ethernet Alliance kicked off the year with strong momentum, building on the success of our 2025 Technology Exploration Forum (TEF 2025): Ethernet for AI and High-Speed Networking (HSN) Plugfest. That forward velocity carried us into a standout multi-vendor interoperability demo at OFC 2026, the release of our TEF 2025 presentations, predictions for the year ahead, and reflections from the latest HSN Plugfest – celebrating the Ethernet Alliance’s 20th anniversary year.

Back to the Future: Welcome, 2026!

The year began with a look back at TEF 2025 and the key question it posed: How should Ethernet evolve as AI accelerates at an unprecedented pace? In the blog Inside TEF 2025: How Ethernet Is Responding to AI’s Rapid Scale, Part 1, speakers unpacked the innovations, collaboration, and hard choices facing an increasingly AI-driven world.  In this sequel blog, we expanded on those themes, highlighting the critical decisions that will enable tomorrow’s resilient, scalable, and future-ready AI ecosystem.

If you missed TEF 2025: Ethernet for AI, you can learn more about the presentations and find download links in the following blog: Inside TEF 2025: Ethernet for AI – Presentations Now Available. We also announced the dates for TEF 2026, which will be held October 7-8, 2026.

Reading the Signals for 2026

As 2026 got underway, the first order of business was to lift the curtain on what lies ahead for Ethernet.

“2026 is going to be another exciting year for Ethernet. This continues to reinforce how beautiful this technology is,” said Carl Wilson, Ethernet Alliance Board Member and Senior Director of Connectivity at MaxLinear. “Ethernet is everywhere. It’s flexible, it’s extensible, and dare I say it, Ethernet is exciting.”

So, what else does 2026 hold for Ethernet? Peering Into Ethernet’s Crystal Ball: Predictions for 2026 delivers unique perspectives and predictions from Ethernet Alliance leaders and members about where the technology is headed, what’s driving change, and why industry collaboration and interoperability matter now more than ever.

Interoperability Showcase at OFC 2026

In March 2026, the Ethernet Alliance returned to OFC, the world’s premier event for optical communications and networking, with a state-of-the-art live multi-vendor interoperability display. Reinforcing Ethernet’s foundational role in AI-ready and terabit-scale networks, the demo brought together industry-leading member companies representing the full stack of the Ethernet ecosystem. Among members attending were Amphenol, Arista Networks, Cisco, EXFO, Hyper Photonix, HPE, Keysight Technologies, MaxLinear, Synopsys, TE Connectivity, Teledyne LeCroy, VeEX, VIAVI Solutions, and Wilder Technologies. You can learn more in our member showcase on our LinkedIn page.

The demo focused on high-speed Ethernet technologies designed for AI-driven and data-intensive environments, exploring next-gen signaling, optics, and system architectures capable of supporting bandwidth growth from 200G/400G/800G to 1.6T and beyond. Full details are available in our AI-Scale Ethernet at the Heart of Ethernet Alliance’s OFC 2026 Demo press release.

Didn’t make it to OFC 2026? You can still catch this year’s demo in action. NextGenInfra produced a great video series, which can be found in our 2026 OFC YouTube playlist. Additional coverage highlights include:

Interoperability in Focus: Lessons from the HSN Plugfest

The first quarter of 2026 ended on a high note with insights from the Ethernet Alliance’s latest HSN Plugfest, highlighting the critical role interoperability plays as Ethernet continues scaling to higher speeds. In From Plugfest to Progress: Key Lessons from the 2025 HSN Plugfest, Sam Johnson, Ethernet Alliance HSN Subcommittee Chair and Engineering Manager at Intel reflects on the plugfest hosted at Keysight Technologies, sharing key takeaways along with embedded videos available in our HSN Plugfest YouTube playlist.

“As Ethernet muscles its way toward higher speeds, interoperability challenges take center stage in the fight for reliability, and the latest 2025 HSN Plugfest reflected that reality. Plugfests come into their own by providing a practical path from early builds to robust, deployment-ready systems.”
